Administering intravenous therapy is a critical yet challenging task for healthcare professionals, particularly when it comes to pediatric patients or individuals with difficult venous access (DIVA). Traditional methods often result in multiple attempts, causing discomfort and stress for both patients and medical staff. However, the 3D Vein Viewer Locator, designed by Shih-Min Lin, Jhen-Ming Liao, and Yi-Chi Li, is set to change the landscape of IV insertions with its unique properties and user-friendly interface.
The device stands out due to its 3D direct mode, which provides a clear visualization of veins, significantly reducing the risk of IV infiltration and increasing the success rate by 30 percent. This is particularly beneficial for patients with thicker tissue layers, where the initial success rate on the first attempt is typically less than 35 percent. With the 3D Vein Viewer, users familiar with vein injection postures can achieve a one-time success rate 13 percent higher than with other methods, reaching an impressive 94 percent.
Shih-Min Lin, Jhen-Ming Liao, and Yi-Chi Li's invention employs 3D Imaging Patent Optical Technology, utilizing a fisheye lens to focus invisible light and refract it through moisture in the limb, resulting in clearer images. This technology surpasses competitors, especially in displaying small veins in obese patients or those with specific medical conditions. The device's user interface is tailored to the insertion posture familiar to healthcare professionals, which has been shown to increase the success rate of first-time insertions.
Technical specifications of the 3D Vein Viewer include a working size of 460*455*160mm, a folded size of 195*310*160mm, and a weight of 4.2KG. The materials used have passed ISO10993 biocompatibility tests, ensuring no allergies or discomfort, and the device boasts safety certifications such as IEC60601-1 and IEC60601-1-2. Its design also features a membrane keypad, addressing the issue of touch screen malfunction due to blood or raindrop interference, a common problem with other devices.
The 3D Vein Viewer Locator has already made its mark on the international stage, with presentations at various medical equipment shows around the world and recognition in prestigious design awards. It has been honored with accolades such as the 2023 Reddot Award for Medical & Innovative, the 2023 Gold Pin Award, and the 2022 National Innovation Award. Its patented technology is recognized in multiple countries, including Taiwan, Korea, Japan, China, and the United States, underscoring its global impact on healthcare.
As a winner of the Iron A' Design Award in the Medical Devices and Medical Equipment Design Category for 2024, the 3D Vein Viewer Locator is celebrated for its practicality, innovation, and contribution to enhancing medical procedures. Its design not only improves the efficiency of IV insertions but also reduces the emotional and physical strain on patients and medical personnel alike. This device is a testament to the power of design and technology in creating a better, more compassionate world of healthcare.
